Story behind the concept

Indonesia's 79th Independence Day festive surrounds us and as always, authentic handdrawn batik pieces tell the best nationalistic stories through its intricate patterns and vibrant colors. To celebrate special day, we designed special collection to honor our country freedom, and uplift our Indonesian batik craftsmanship work throughout the 8 decades journey.

We blended traditional motifs with symbols of independence, such as the Stork and the traditional Banji and Latohan wrapped in the national flag color and its derivative. These are our expression of the journey of Indonesia from colonization to its triumphant declaration of independence on August 17, 1945. Each stroke of wax and dye was a tribute to the struggles and victories of our ancestors. We are wearing them with pride and we believe you will too.

Meaning of the Motif

There are 3 distinct figures we used in our 2024 independence day collection: Storks, Banji, and Latohan. We feel these 3 motifs made the best impression of current state of Indonesia professional landscape: in tumultuous times, we are always in need of extra resilience and harmony. Sturdy corporates and entities are not the by product of their over-engineered facades, but rather, their harmonious foundations.

In the olden days, storks symbolized grace, longevity, and prosperity, making them an esteemed motif in traditional batik. Their elegant forms, often depicted in intricate patterns, conveyed a sense of balance and harmony, reflecting the cultural reverence for nature’s beauty and wisdom. The inclusion of storks in batik designs underscored the wearer’s connection to these auspicious qualities, elevating the fabric to a timeless piece of art.

The banji motif, characterized by its distinctive swastika-like design, symbolized eternity and the cyclical nature of life. This geometric pattern, deeply rooted in ancient symbolism, conveyed notions of continuity, harmony, and the interconnectedness of all things. The presence of the banji motif in batik exemplified a profound respect for cosmic order and timeless wisdom, imbuing the fabric with a sense of enduring significance.

Inspired by the latoh seaweed, symbolized resilience, adaptability, and the nourishment of life. This delicate, intricate pattern reflected the coastal heritage of Lasem, celebrating the region’s maritime culture and natural abundance. The latohan motif infused the fabric with a sense of vitality and enduring connection to the sea, enhancing its cultural and artistic value.
